WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PRUNE TREES?

Depending on your desired results pruning while leaves are changing in fall and before flower blooms in spring, is the best time to prune trees.

Talk to your Oak Bros arborist about pruning before spring blooms emerge. Typically a tree's pruning cycle is 3 to 5 years, but tree species, size and health of your tree play a role in the trimming cycle that will work best for your tree.

WHY IS LATE FALL THROUGH EARLY SPRING BEST FOR TREE PRUNING?

In fall and winter, trees enter a dormant stage,(when a tree has stopped putting energy into growing its canopy). This inactivity along with dropping temperatures creates an ideal setting for pruning. If you prune after new growth has started, you can limit the plant’s bloom potential for the year and introduce the tree to insect and disease. Which is due to the stress the tree has endured from pruning.

Also the frozen ground in winter gives arborists easy access to the tree, and the bare canopy makes branches easier to see and handle.

Anytime between late fall and early spring is best for tree trimming or pruning to minimize the risk of pest problems associated with wound entry.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRUNING IN LATE FALL OR WINTER?

Pruning/Trimming trees in the dormant season promotes tree’s current health and allows trees to take advantage of the full growing season to begin closing and compartmentalizing wounds.

An added plus, dormant pruning saves time and your hard earned money by helping with disease management.
